How to create a website thank you page on Squarespace

If you’re a service provider or coach then your website absolutely needs a thank you page. But what actually is it and why is it so important?

This blog post is going to break it all down and explain how a thank you page can keep you audience engaged, resolve FAQs and help make your business more efficient.

What is a thank you page?

A thank you page is a dedicated page on your website that a user is redirected to when they fill out your contact form or subscribe to your email list.

A thank you page is different from a thank you message as the user will move away from the original page they were on, to this dedicated page. A thank you message on the other hand, will usually pop up in place of a contact/newsletter sign up form and the user will stay on the original page they were on.

Why do you need a thank you page?

A thank you page is extremely powerful for two reasons, keeping potential enquires engaged and tracking your website performance.

Performance Tracking

Adding a thank you page is one of the easiest ways to track how many people filled out your contact form or downloaded a freebie from your website.

This is particularly the case if you are using Google Analytics to track your website performance as you can track the number of visitors these pages get. You can then mark these people as a “conversion”, as by viewing the thank you page, you know that these people filled in your contact form or downloaded your freebie and were redirected.

Why is this helpful? This means that Google analytics can start to track metrics like your conversion rate which you can use to make informed decisions about your website. For example, if your conversion rate increases after making some changes to the text on your website, then you know that this was a good investment. VS if your conversion rate went down, you might consider swapping back to your previous copy.

This can all be tracked using thank you pages marked as conversions in Google Analytics, hence why thank you pages are invaluable.

Boosting Engagement

Thank you pages are also extremely useful tools for making the most of your already-engaged website visitors. If someone is viewing your thank you page, these people are your hottest leads! They literally JUST filled out your contact form or download your freebie.

Therefore we don’t want to waste this hot hot hot engagement. By directing people to an engaging thank you page, you can keep them interested in your world and get them to take the next step with you.

What should you include on your thank you page? Some examples:

It’s all good having a thank you page, but what should it actually include?

Depending on what you are “thanking” them for, can influence what kind content you want to include on your thank you page. Here are a few examples to get the cogs whirring.

A personal thank you video

This is a fantastic place to include a short but sweet video personally thanking them for getting in touch and what they can expect next. It’s a creative way of adding that personal touch and positively surprising people before they even jump on a call with you or check out the freebie.

What to expect next

If someone has just got in contact with you, you can use this opportunity to let them know it will take 48 hours to expect a reply or what to expect next e.g. being invited to a consultation call. Or if they just downloaded your freebie, you could remind them to check their inbox and spam just in case.

A quick market research questionnaire

As the people landing on your thank you page are super engaged already, you can make the most of this audience and ask them a couple of questions in the form of a quick market research questionnaire. I personally have this on my own thank you page when people download my free website project planner.

Just 2-3 questions asking them about their struggles/goals so you can use this to inform your marketing efforts moving forward. You might even spot some trends of certain people downloading certain freebies.

A tripwire product

If your thank you page is after purchasing a product or downloading your freebie, then you could consider promoting a tripwire product.

A tripwire product is a low-cost product (usually less than £10) which is relevant to the product/freebie they just purchased. Not many people will buy a tripwire product, however psychologically when someone purchases from you, they are more likely to purchase again. That makes it a great way of capitalising on your already-engaged audience, making a little bit of money and increasing the likelihood of them purchasing from you again.

How to create a thank you page in Squarespace?

Step 1: Create an unlinked page

Firstly, you need to create the page itself by creating a not linked page. You can do this by going to your website pages > not linked > +

Then you can go ahead and design the page to include whatever you think would be best suited to your audience and customer journey.

Make sure the page is not linked anywhere else on your website, including your footer so that you analytics software only tracks people who have got in touch / downloaded your freebie.

Step 2: Edit your contact form post-submit settings to redirect to your new thank-you page.

You can do this by heading to your contact form > settings > post-submit > redirect > select your new thank-you page.

Step 4: Test it!

This is one of the biggest mistakes I see people making, not testing it works! Fill in your own contact form and make sure you are redirected to the right page and recieing the contact request all okay.

It is better that you figure it out now, than a potential client be confused from being redirected to the wrong page.

And then you’re good to go!
